The following scams have been reported by Essex Police:
-
Scam One is from a caller purporting to be from a well known computer package company. They will ask you if there is a problem with your computer running slowly. (Please note that this is something that will occur to everyone's computer at some point). At this point you should say no thank you and put down the phone. If you do keep listening to the caller they will ask you to key in a few details which will display several viruses and then ask if you will give them permission to access your computer to repair them. They get you to enable "remote access" which then allows them to watch what you are doing on the computer. Then they will ask you to pay for their services - usually by credit card. This is a scam to obtain all your passwords, personal information etc. as well as charging you for the privilege of "fixing" your computer.
- Scam Two - With the Olympics coming up there are bound to be several scams, but this is the first one to be drawn to your attention.
You might receive a call about the Euro Millions and will be quoted the Olympic Delivery Authority - they will ask you for your banking details. The male that has been reported so far is possibly a Nigerian male. The scam is also coming in the form of a letter with an address in Latimer Street, London.
If someone calls to say that you have won some money, IT IS A SCAM. The only people who make money are those who con people into giving their bank details and the only surprise you will have will probably be an empty bank balance.
