THE FACTS ABOUT CRIMESTOPPERS.

What is Crimestoppers?

Crimestoppers is an independent charity that runs the 0800 555 111 number which allows people to call and give information about crime and criminals anonymously.  They do not ask for your name and they never try to trace or record your call.  You would not have to give evidence in court.  They only want to know what you know, not who you are.

Why call Crimestoppers?

We are all concerned about crime in our local communities but instead of staying silent there is something you can do about it.  The police cannot solve crime on their own - they need help from the public.  Sometimes they know who the criminals are but don't have enough evidence to make an arrest.  Information which comes from Crimestoppers can often be the missing piece of information that will help them to make an arrest.  Anyone who has information about crime and wants to do more to make their community safer should call Crimestoppers.

How is information used?

When someone calls Crimestoppers they speak to a specially trained person.  All the information that can be given is taken down and passed on to the police for investigation.  Nothing is recorded about the call or caller.  In many cases, the information helps an enquiry already taking place, though sometimes it tells the police something completely new.  This is why without the help of callers to Crimestoppers, some crimes might never be solved.

Does Crimestoppers get results?

Definitely.  Within the UK an average of 18 people are arrested and charged every day as a result of information given to Crimestoppers.  One person every six days is charged with murder, thanks to Crimestoppers information.  Since Crimestoppers began in 1988, it has received over 700,000 calls with useful information, resulting in over 64,000 arrests and charges.  Over £86 million worth of property has been recovered and over £114 million worth of drugs.
