The biennial Twinning Asssociation visit to Verberie in May was a resounding success. |
 |
After a leisurely lunch with our hosts after arriving on Saturday we attended a brief ceremony at the military cemetery in Verberie where a plaque placed on the graves of 5 British soldiers killed in World War I was unveiled by the Mayor to the accompaniment of the local band. This was followed by a live concert in the concert hall by a young French group and the talented English jazz group, Chameleon, who had travelled with us at the request of our hosts.

On Sunday we visited the magnificent chateau of Fontainebleau which has been recently restored to its former glory; then after lunch in a nearby restaurant we drove the short distance to the delightful artist's village of Barbizon where we visited the Auberge Ganne museum and enjoyed a guided tour of the village; the visit was rounded off with an excellent dinner at a manoir in Barbizon.

 Naours |
Bidding farewell to our generous hosts after breakfast on Monday, we drove to the village of Naours where we toured the amazing underground city which was home to villagers for many hundreds of years, used by the British as a hospital during World War I and by the Germans in World War II as an arms and munitions depot. We just had time for a quick visit to the hypermarket in Calais before completing the journey back to Rayne. |

All 36 members of the group agreed that they had had a fantastic time in France and are looking forward to the visit of our French friends next year.
