August Meeting

"I'll eat my hat" and "keep it under your hat" plus many more interesting quotes and superstitions were explained to us by this month's speaker Marion Langley, whose topic of the talk was "origins of English sayings and superstitions".  Marion's interesting and lively talk explained, amongst a host of other things, how we came to have pockets.  She also explained how some superstitions were heard in some areas of the country and even told us that in the medieval days there could be several words for just one thing.  The WI was truly spellbound and you could almost hear a pin drop!  She finished the talk by explaining the origin of the bride's "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue".

After tea names were collected for the trip to Highgrove.  This trip has been long awaited and we were all pleased to at last have the invitation to visit the gardens and especially pleased as this year we celebrate our 90th birthday.

In keeping with the theme of superstitions the competition of a lucky charm was won by Jan Lockwood, second came Jenny Belcher followed by Mary Mouser in third place.

The raffle prizes were won by Margaret Rose, Mary Walker and Valerie Hearn.

Just before we left Susan Tyler-Damon reminded us that she had only received two photos for the calendar competition of Essex buildings, old or new and that we should get snapping!!

At next month's meeting on 2 September will be Harold Mousley speaking on "Bahamian Interlude" and the competition will appropriately be sea shells and the stall will be jigsaws.

For future speakers and events see our programme.
